The Mysterious Men

Steven was walking home from school one day, he was walking on the trail through the woods right behind his house. Steven looked behind him as he heard a twig snap in half, but when he looked behind him, there was nobody there. Steven continued walking until he heard an even bigger stick crack in half! He looked through the trees and saw his house, about five minutes away. But instead of continuing toward his house Steven retraced his steps back, and he saw something he would never forget, there were three men, all about six feet tall. They were wearing dark black clothes and a blue mask. As Steven saw them, they stood up and ran, back into the woods. Steven stood there for a few seconds, and then darted the other way towards his house.
The next day Steven told his friend Bob about these men, “We should follow them sometime, so that way we can see where they are coming from”. “Okay” said Bob “but we’ll have to follow them after school sometime instead of before school’. They decided that they would camp out in the woods until these men came back, and then they would follow them on there bikes.
The next day before school, Steven and Bob parked there bikes in the woods, along with a few packs containing these things: flashlights, binoculars, dark clothes, some rope, walkie talkies, and some bottles of water.” I think we have all of the stuff we need, we should get going to school before we’re late”. After they had these things hidden in the woods they both continued walking through the woods to go to school. A few minutes before the bell rang, Steven snuck out of his seat, trying to be as quite as a mouse, and slowly opened the door as his teacher wrote there homework assignment on the board. He then met up with Bob in the hallway. When they got to the bikes, they got down on there stomach’s and waited. A few minutes later they heard a twig crack. They exchanged worried glances, but didn’t make a noise. Bob noticed it first, a man in a dark suit, he was sneaking from tree to tree, and every once and a while a twig would crack under his feet and he would freeze. He would then continue on. When the man did not find anything, he disappointedly walked of down the trial. “I think we should wait a while, and then follow him” said Bob, “I agree, but we can’t wait to long we might not be able to catch up to him” said Steve. After a few minutes they got on there bikes and started to follow him.
“There he is” said Steven. “He’s going into the old warehouse; I wonder what he has in there”. Bob and Steven moved in closer.” Hey look at that up there! It’s a ladder; we can climb to the top of the roof and see what they’re doing”. So they both climbed to the top of the warehouse and looked down. “Wow! Look at that car” exclaimed Steven! In the middle of the warehouse was a big car that was shiny and looked brand new. The car was painted navy blue with a little bit of white around the wheels.” Hey Steven, guess what? I saw a car like that on the news one time, except it wasn’t a regular car, some people say it’s a flying car”! “A flying car”! Shouted Steven, “that’s ridiculous; there’s no such thing as a flying car”! Steven was about to prove his point more to Bob, but he then heard people below shouting, almost as if they were annoyed. Steven realized that these were the same men that had followed him the other day. Steven then heard them starting to talk “I can’t believe we finished the car, it would have been much easier if I was able to get that kid to follow us. He would have been small enough to fit through that small space to put that screw in”!” Yeah but you probably scared him off by following him through those woods”! “But I had to find out where he lived” pleaded the man. Steven gasped; he had just looked down, and noticed that the men took of their masks for the first time! And they all had green skin! ALIENS!
“Let’s get out of here” screamed Bob. But all of the sudden the engine roared to a start and the warehouse was suddenly filled with the strong smell of smoke, shelves lined the walls, but they were no longer standing, they were all toppled over.” Wow, look at that” screamed Steven! “The car is lifting up in the air”. And sure enough the car was floating in mid air, completely still. The aliens each grabbed a pack, put it in the car, which was still floating completely still, opened the doors, and got in the car. Steven and Bob heard old rusty doors screech open at the front of the warehouse, and the car shot threw the doors and flew off into the sky!
Why we should go to California

Dear Mom and Dad,
I think that we should take a trip to California! I think a trip to California would be a perfect place to go this summer. I think this because we wouldn’t have to pay lots of money to get a hotel, we could stay with Grandpa at his house, and if we stayed there we could cook food instead of going out to eat every night. Another great thing about California is that there are lots of hiking trails to walk on, and when you walk on these hiking trails you get to see tons of great scenery!
Another advantage going to California is that it has perfect swimming weather! The weather is also good for just relaxing, which is what you should be doing on a trip anyway! And the weather is so much different from Kansas weather, so it would be a good change. Those are all really awesome things about California, but the best reason we should go is that there are lots of cool places in California, such as Los Angeles, Palm Springs, San Diego, and San Francisco. There are really cool things to do in each of those cities, such as going to Alcatraz, the beach, and really cool MLB stadiums! Those are all of the reasons why it would be cool to take a trip to California. Please consider going there because there are lots of cool things to do!
Sincerely,
Josh
Baseball and Hockey

Have you ever been to a hockey or a baseball game? They are both sports, but if you think about it, they are almost completely different.
In hockey, you can hit people with your fists, push them into walls, and get in fights. But if you did that in baseball, you would probably get kicked out of the game. And also in hockey if there is a tie, the first person to score wins, but in baseball you just play an extra inning, and whoever is in the lead at the end of those innings wins. Another reason that hockey and baseball are different from baseball is that in hockey, they play timed quarters, unlike in baseball you just play until 9 innings are over. And in baseball in hockey they have the most different gear. In hockey they have pucks, helmets, hockey sticks, gloves, ice skates and other pads. In baseball you have baseball bats, gloves, batting helmets, a baseball, and cleats.
Baseball and hockey are very different, but they also have a lot of things in common. For starters they are both a sport. But also both sports take lots of skill and speed. You need those things in both sports to play because you might have to catch up to a player to tag him out; you might have to catch up to a guy going down the hockey arena, or you might even have to chase down a ground ball. Another thing that both hockey and baseball have in common is that they both have some sort of a dugout for the players to stay in during the game. I think that both sports have these to protect players from, the baseballs, and hockey pucks that are flying around. The last thing that they have in common is that both sports have some sort of special shoe to where to help them play the game. Baseball has cleats and hockey has skates, both of these shoes help the players play well!
I only gave a few reasons how they are different or similar, but there are many other examples.

Dear Frank Martin,
My name is Josh and I am a big KSU wildcat’s fan. I live in Kansas and I enjoy playing outside, and playing basketball. I also enjoy watching the Wildcats Basketball team on TV.
I am mainly writing this letter to ask you a few questions, about the basketball team. These are my questions:
1. What type of drills do you do in practice to get ready for a game?
2. How did you feel about the basketball team and how they played against KU?
3. Do you think that Jacob Pollon is a good team leader, and can lead the team pretty far in the Big Twelve Tournament?
4. Do you think that you will be able to beat KU in Lawrence?
5. Do you think K-State would be able to take second place in the Big Twelve?
6. Do you think Jacob Pollon will be a top prospect in the NBA?
7. Who is one of your best players who you can count on to come off the bench in clutch situations and still play well?
Thank you again for taking your time to read my questions. If you do have the time to answer my questions could you also please send your autograph? If you would like to email the answers then send them to ferrellj@usd231.comor if you would like to mail send them to 16200 Kill Creek Road Gardner, Kansas 66030. Thank you again!
Sincerely,
Josh

Broken Wall

It was a very good day! My family was going over to my cousin’s house for his birthday party. There was going to be cake, ice cream and lots of different pop! I was also excited because my cousin and I have dunk contests on his mini-basketball goal in his basement. This was going to be a fun time!
When we got to my aunts house, all of our other cousins were already there, and they were all running around while drinking pop and eating chips. I put our present by all the other presents and went downstairs in the basement. When I got down there I found my cousin and brother already starting to play a video game on there X-box. I watched them play for a while, and then my cousin said “do you guys want to have a dunk contest”?
My cousin would dunk first, then me, and then my brother. We went through once and we decided to play just one more round. We decided on one more round because every time we would dunk the ball we would fall backwards and hit the wall, and we didn’t want to put a hole in it. But as you can imagine, the next dunk my cousin did he fell right into the wall, putting a big three foot tall hole in it! For a while we just stood there looking at it, my cousin still on the floor. We were all to shocked to move. I finally went up and tried to see if I could put the wall back together somehow, but since the hole was so big, there was no way we could fix it without a hammer and nails!
We decided that I would go upstairs and cause a distraction while my cousin grabbed a few nails and a hammer from a drawer in there kitchen. My brother would stay in the basement to make sure nobody saw the wall. My cousin and I crept up the stairs, trying to act casual. When we got up the steps I went up to the drawer and blocked the parents view. Then I started to talk to all of the parents trying to act like nothing was wrong. I looked back and my cousin had the nails and the hammer. I started to walk back down into the basement, blocking the parents view from my cousin. I thought that we were in the clear when my cousin dropped the hammer, and as you would guess the parents heard and came to see what it was. We told them it was nothing and that we just had to borrow the hammer, but they all decided to look for themselves.
To make a long story short, all of the parents went in the basement and saw the wall. They couldn’t fix the wall so the stuffed some blankets inside of the wall to cover it up. Me, my cousin, and my brother didn’t get in too much trouble because they knew it was an accident. And to this day there is still a big hole in my cousin’s wall!
Playing School Sports

I think that 6th graders should be able to play sports for there schools! Only 7th and 8th graders can play, but it would be cool to have 6th graders play too. Keep reading and you will be able to read about all the reasons why I think 6th graders should be able to play school sports!
My first reason why I think sixth graders should be able to play school sports is, most 6th graders are really good at different sports, and they could probably be able to compete with a 7th grade JV team. Or sixth graders should be able to at least practice with teams and then if the coach thinks there good enough, they can move up and play with the team.
My second reason I think sixth graders should be able to play school sports is, that some 6th graders are big enough to play school sports. Most 6th graders are not as big as 7th graders but most sixth graders can still play good sports.
The third reason I think sixth graders should be able to play school sports is, that if 6th graders start playing school sports when they are in sixth grade, they will be much better when they get to 7th and 8th grade, or even when they get to high school or college!
The fourth reason I think 6th graders should be able to play school sports is: 6th graders will be able to enjoy sports more if they are playing for there school. And it will let 6th graders get involved with other things besides book clubs, and other school activities.
Those are all the reasons I think that 6th graders should be able to play school sports. Hopefully someday 6th graders will be able to play school sports!

Lesson 14 – Brian’s Winter
Think Critically
1. Why was Brian nervous about the coming of winter?
Because it would be really cold and he didn’t have the right equipment.
2. If Betty hadn’t come to Brian’s rescue during the bear’s visit, what might have happened?
If Betty had not have come then the bear could have broken most of Brians bones, or the bear could have killed him.
3. Based on what you know about the outdoors, do the events in this story seem believable? Explain. Yes because he had to hunt and make shelter.
4. What theme does the relationship between Brian and Betty suggest?
You can be freinds with anyone. Because Betty was a skunk and Brian was a human.
5. Write a paragraph that describes what Brian’s actions in the wilderness reveal about his character. Use details from the story to support your answer.
Being in the wilderness showed that Brian was smart enough to make things to help him suvive the winter. It also showed that Brian was not afraid to try new things to help him survive!
Greek Mythology- Greeks Main Belief

Have you ever heard of Greek mythology? Well if not keep reading and you can find out about some of the more powerful gods, titans, and some of the different creatures. So please keep reading so you can learn all about the Greeks main beliefs!
Some of the more popular people in the Greek myths were all of the gods and goddesses. The three main gods were Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon. One of the most powerful gods was Zeus. Zeus was considered the father of all titans. When Zeus was born his father Cronus wanted to eat him and his brothers. The reason Cronus wanted to eat him because he knew he would be more powerful. His brothers were Hades, Hestia, Hera, Poseidon, and Demeter. Zeus also had many sons and daughters.
Hades deceived Zeus even though he was his brother. Hades is also the keeper of the underworld, where it is believed that all the people who died went there. To get in to the underworld you had to pay the guards at the front a gold coin. So when people died they were buried with a single gold coin under there tongue. The underworld was guarded by a three headed dog named Cerberus. Later in time Heracles captured this three headed dog from the underworld. Hades is known to have been stuck with the god of the underworld because no one else wanted it.
Poseidon was also a famous god. He was the ruler of the sea. He was also a brother of Zeus. He had a dragon that protected him. He caused many earthquakes. Another god is the Greek god Ares. He was the god of war. His symbol is a vulture and a dog. But Ares was usually with other gods when he fought in battle. Ares is also known to be very evil! I don’t think we have talked about any goddesses.
Aphrodite was the goddess of love. Many Greek gods loved her. Like Zeus and Poseidon got in a fight about her but there wives said no. She was evil and born from the foam of a sea. The last god that we are going to talk about is Hermes! Hermes was a messenger for some of his life. He was also a person who escorted people down to the underworld. Later in his life he built a little workshop on Mount Olympus. While he was in this workshop he invented the alphabet, astronomy, and scales. That is all of the gods and goddess that we are going to talk about.
Next were going to talk about the Titans. The most powerful was Cronus. Gave birth to Zeus. He wanted to eat him. But Rhea saved Zeus and took him to Krete. Cronus also caused a 10 year war. He is the father of all Titans and gave birth to every god. He ruled all of the Cosmos. He controlled most all of the Cyclopes. Next was a very strong Titan. Most of you probably already know a little bit about this Titan because he has been in a movie! Heracles was a big strong Titan. During his life he fought and killed many strong and powerful creatures. During the twelve labors he had to perform after he killed his two kids he also fought many beasts. One of these was when he went down to Hades (underworld) to capture the three headed dog Cerberus. When he got to the gates he was not dead and he did not pay any fine to get to the front gates, and somehow he still got threw and killed and brought back Cerberus.
A really cool one was Uranus. He was the Sky Titan. People say that the sky was made of brass. His wife was Gaia and they had 18 kids. One day his blood drenched the city and flooded it. Our last Titan is Hesiod. Hesiod was an oral poet. He was one of the twelve titans that there was in Greek mythology. He was a awesome writer in Greece. When he was young he also worked as a Sheppard in the mountains. During his life he lived in a small town called Ascra. Mostly during his life he was a writer.
I hoped you enjoy the Titans but now were going to do creatures. You have probably heard of a Kraken. They are very powerful sea creatures. Poseidon controlled most of them. Next we’ll do a centaur. You will know what a centaur looks like if you have seen any of the Narnia movies. They are half horse, and half man. They have the head, torso, and arms of a man, but the rest of there body is horse. In Greek history the centaurs had war with the Lapiths. The war was lost and the centaurs had to leave the area. The centaurs were known to be very wild.
A really interesting creature was a Minotaur. They have a head of a bull and the body of a man. It was born by Queen Pasiphae to stay in Krete. But then there came many more. Probably the worst and most terrifying was Cerberus. Cerberus was a three headed dog that guarded the entrance to the underworld. It was said that Cerberus has three heads, a dragon’s tail, and has snakes growing on his back. His parents were Echidna, a serpent, and Typhon, who was a fire breathing giant! A really cool creature was the Dragon. There is very many of them but the one were going to do is the Ethiopian Dragon. The Ethiopian Dragon was always sent by Posiedon. One day Poseidon sent it to go kill Queen Cassiopeia. But Peruses on his way back from killing Medusa. He saw that Poseidon was going to kill her. He stopped him and the Dragon too.
Are last creature is the famous Cyclopes. The Cyclopes was basically a man as big as a human with one eye right in the middle of there forehead. They mostly were good for causing destruction. In Greek mythology there were three main Cyclopes: Bronte’s, Argues, and Steropes. These monsters were very skilled blacksmiths! The even created Zeus’s thunderbolts! That is what some of the creatures in Greek mythology were like!
I hoped you enjoyed our Greek Mythology info. To all you authors out there maybe you’ll make this into a book. I know we are true Greek Mythology Gods when it comes to telling about this stuff. That’s all for today. Bye.
